How Technology is Changing Disaster Relief?

You might be surprised to know that since the year 2010, there have been around more than 2000 natural disasters that have been reported so far.  This means that around 335 disasters are recorded every single year in different regions of the world.  This also includes the amount of 820 floods and around 50 storms.  Every year around more than 138 million are affected by the suffering of natural disasters in the world.

Recent High Result of Natural Disasters

On January 12, 2010, around a 7.0 magnitude earthquake gradually hit the areas of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. This natural disaster causes the death of 230,000 to around 316,000 deaths. 300,000 people were injured severely and around more than 1.4 million were misplaced from their own homes.

In the same way, March 11, 2011, a high 9.0 magnitude quake hit the areas of Tohoku, Japan. This massive earthquake damaged more than 121,747 properties to completely collapse. Around 15,000 lost their lives and more than 6000 were badly injured. More than 25000 people went missing.

Use of Technology at Natural Disaster Sites

There was a time when technology was used as a medium to fast track with the efforts of natural disaster relief. In this whole scenario, robots and drones were used to easily locate the survivors and transmit the basic information to different emergency teams.  There were even used for dropping humanitarian aid.

    Technology

Soon after the natural disaster of Haiti earthquake, so many different projects were announced in which the medium of technology played a massive role. Through the involvement of technology, mobile phones played a prominent role to let the people get into communication with one another in those areas where the network coverage is low. TERA stands for the Trilogy Emergency Relief Application. It is one such system of SMS text which was designed for making the two-way communication extra convenient and easy.  This communication channel was much needed between different aid agencies as well as people who were severally affected by natural disasters.  This technology was used for the first time after the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

After the natural disaster of the 2015 Nepal earthquake, NASA Finder was introduced as a response to this incident.  This NASA Finder is working as a suitcase-size device that can easily detect the human heartbeats under the course of 20 feet of some solid concrete as well as 30 feet of rubble.

In the middle of it, we would also like to mention the ALIRT technology as well. ALIRT stands for Airborne Ladar Imaging Research Testbed. This technology is used for producing a superior and high resolution based 3D renderings of infrastructure as well as terrain.  It let the person of the affected area figure out about the road travel conditions as well as helicopter landing zones.

High Importance of Social Media in Disaster Communications

Micromappers was introduced in the year 2013 and it started working after the natural disaster of the 2015 Nepal earthquake, as well as Typhoon Haiyan in the year 2013 and different other major disasters.  This application was used for creating a complete roadmap for the social media relief updates and sends it straight away to the aid agencies.  It brings them complete information about the real-time updates from the affected areas.  Micromapper initially comes about to be so much effective for the aid organizations so they can plan the relief efforts before making their visit to any disaster zone.

Google People Finder was known out to be another effective technology medium which was a lot helpful when it comes to dealing with some major disaster relief efforts.  It was introduced in2010 during the Haiti Earthquake. It works as an open-source web application that you can avail of in 40 different languages. The application will be letting the users post their status so the aid agencies can search those people from the affected areas.

The Red Cross Emergency App turns out to be so effective for the disaster areas for aid relief. It enables the survivors to know about the weather updates or safety tips.  In this discussion, we will be also mentioning aerial robotics as well. This aerial robotics is all about unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or the use of drones which is a lot helpful in humanitarian aid. It turns out to be so much helpful in providing a complete awareness related to the situation. Another major technology was known as Mobile Vulnerability analysis and mapping (MVA)! This technology was used for the collection of manual data as well as a survey.

All through the assistance of some Big Data Analytics, responses of the disaster have been so much improved through the involvement of intelligence. The application will be letting the users post their status so the aid agencies can search those people from the affected areas. There was a time when technology was used as a medium to fast track with the efforts of natural disaster relief. In this whole scenario, robots and drones were used to easily locate the survivors and transmit the basic information to different emergency teams.   A huge amount of data can easily be created in which we have personal data, medical data or mapping as well as tracking the survivors. But the real challenge starts when you have to manage the data effectively.

    Conclusion:

It would not be wrong to say that the disaster is accountable to bring some emotional as well as mental and physical destruction for any person.  It might also vanish the whole infrastructure as well.  The emergence of the communication brings a huge impact inn which mobile network coverage also played a vital role.   This technology communication channel was much needed between different aid agencies as well as people who were severally affected by natural disasters.  Right through the involving use of the technology some new mediums were announced and still some new applications are on its way to be launched by different companies which will be working for the benefit of the disaster aid.
